Steve Nelson joined Chambers in January 2023, having been a Crown Court Defence Advocate (HCA) since 2001. He founded and ran his own Criminal Defence Solicitors Practice for 30 years prior to his transfer to the Bar in November 2022. Steve is a Barrister who knows the system from all angles – all the way from the Police Station to the Central Criminal Court.

I have really enjoyed all the times that we have been in court together. You are the best solicitor and solicitor advocate I have ever encountered and it has always been an absolute pleasure to see you. (HHJ upon his retirement)

He has undertaken various high profile cases including Murders and other Serious Violence. His first murder case was as case manager and team leader in 1979, his most recent a 3 month trial (2024) at the Central Criminal Court. Steve also specialises in Dishonesty and Fraud, Drugs and Public Order Matters.

Steve is known for his ability to assimilate any case no matter how detailed in a matter of moments. Lay clients value him for his humour, candour, calmness and empathy, professional clients for his keen appreciation of all that solicitors require to assist in their practice.

Your calm professionalism and good humour made a frightening time bearable

He has been involved in Criminal Defence work since he left school in 1976, qualifying first as a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives in 1983 and then as a Solicitor in 1986. Throughout that time he undertook the wide variety of preparation work required of a criminal caseworker.

He was admitted as a Higher Court Advocate (Crime) in 2001 and has exercised rights of audience in the Crown Court since then.

Thank you for your Magic work. It’s an amazing Christmas present for the family for sure
